JUNIOR FOOTBALL PATHWAY

Shepparton United Football Club along with the GMFL/GVFL provide a pathway for footballers from Auskick to Under 16’s and beyond. All players are allocated into teams in line with the Club’s ‘Team Selection Policy’ before the season starts. Teams are treated differently depending on the age group. In 2025 there are:

Modified Rules Teams: Under 9s & Under 10s

The emphasis at these age levels is on learning the game, having fun and participation. Each player has equal time on the field in each position, irrespective of ability. There is no visible score board, ladder or finals and the rules are modified.

Parents are encouraged to support this low-key approach to the beginning of their child’s football journey with the understanding that as the child progresses through the age groups, the level of competition increases.

Under 12

In this age group, the rules are updated, and scoring is properly introduced. Scoring is published and ladders are available for viewing on the PlayHQ. However, at this age group there is a “mercy rule” and any winning margin greater than 60 points is not shown.

At the end of the season qualifying teams will play off in a finals series with the winning team achieving a premiership. All players in this age group are to be given the opportunity of fair and reasonable playing time irrespective of ability or skill or any other factor. However, attendance and attitude at training sessions and games may also influence game time and the expectations of all players is to attend training and always show respect to the coaching team.

The coaches will have absolute discretion on game day selection, and should there be any issues, a parent is to follow the published dispute resolution policy.

Under 14 & 16

In the top age groups, GMFL/GVFL divisions are more evident and there is no mercy rule for scoring. If there is more than one team in the age group, the teams will be graded based on football ability as determined by the Football Department.

At the end of the season qualifying teams will play off in a finals series with the winning team achieving a premiership. All players will be expected to gain a level of fitness as required to play in these age levels, to improve their health, wellbeing and prevention of injury.

Senior Football

We are closely associated with the Shepparton United Football Netball Club, and we pride ourselves being #oneclubunited.  The junior and senior clubs are separate legal entities; however, we are working closely together to further strengthen our pathway for players leaving U16 junior football and youth girls wishing to transition into Senior Football.

Youth Girls Football
All girls are encouraged and welcome to play football with SUFNC. There is a full girls competition run by the MBCM Goulburn Murray Girls & Women’s League. In 2025 we are fielding a team in the Under 18 girls’ competition. All girls eligible to play in this competition are being encouraged to play in this team and if they wish to play a second game, they may also play in a mixed team subject to availability. Representative Teams Players may be invited to play in representative teams for our competition Goulburn Murray Women’s & Girls levels in 18U.

Netball Pathway

Shepparton United Football Netball Club offers a structured pathway for young netballers aspiring to play A-grade within our club. Coaching begins at the 13 & Under level, encompassing both primary and secondary school players within the Shepparton Netball Association.

Selection into the 15 & Under teams for the Shepparton Netball Association (SNA) and Goulburn Valley Football Netball League (GVFNL) provides a valuable opportunity for further development, leading to participation in our 17 & Under GVFNL team, and ultimately progressing to senior netball within the GVFNL.

Players will have the opportunity to be selected through trials to represent and participant in both the Shepparton Netball Association (SNA) Squad Championships and the Goulburn Valley Football Netball League Interleague Teams(GVFNL).
